About me
My name is James Yates
I help men who look functional on the outside but feel stuck underneath, by doing depth work that stays practical.
My stance is simple: therapy should be honest, focused, and useful in real life.

Most people don’t come to therapy because they want to “talk about their feelings.” They come because something isn’t working: anger leaks out, anxiety won’t switch off, intimacy feels hard, or life looks good on paper but feels flat inside.
I chose this work because I’m interested in what drives people: the hidden rules we live by, the protections we built, and the costs we keep paying.
I believe change happens when you understand the function of a pattern and practise a new response in the moments that normally hijack you.
My job is to help you slow down, tell the truth, and build a steadier way of relating to yourself and the people you care about.
I’m direct, warm, and collaborative, challenging when it’s needed, never shaming. Sessions are focused and human: we’ll work with what’s happening in your life right now, make sense of the deeper patterns underneath it, and turn insight into progress you can feel.
Strong fit if you: want depth and practical change; are ready to be honest; want better self-control, clearer boundaries, stronger relationships, and more self-respect.
Not the best fit if you: want quick reassurance without doing the work; want someone to take sides in every conflict; or need urgent crisis support (I can help you find the right resources).
As a general rule, the first few sessions will look like this:
Assessment: what’s going on, what you want to change, and where you feel stuck.
Patterns: we map the repeating loop (triggers - reactions - consequences) and what it protects you from.
Plan: we agree a clear focus, how we’ll work, and what progress will look like, then begin practising new responses.
This can take a varying amount of time depending on how the therapy is going.
Outside the therapy room I’m drawn to training and discipline (Brazilian jiu jitsu), long walks, and the kind of quiet routines that make life feel more grounded.
If this resonates, book a free 30-minute intro call and we’ll see if working together feels like the right fit.
